The Kansas Income Tax
Kansas collects a state income tax at a maximum marginal tax rate of %, spread across tax brackets. Like the Federal Income Tax, Kansas' income tax allows couples filing jointly to pay a lower overall rate on their combined income with wider tax brackets for joint filers.
Kansas' maximum marginal income tax rate is the 1st highest in the United States, ranking directly below Kansas' %. You can learn more about how the Kansas income tax compares to other states' income taxes by visiting our map of income taxes by state.
Unlike many other states, Kansas does not allow municipalities or school districts to collect additional surtaxes on earned income on top of the Kansas income tax. However, 30 Kansas counties, 105 Kansas cities, and 400 Kansas townships impose a local intangibles tax on interest, dividends, and securities transactions (but not wages).
The surtaxes are generally uniform: county taxes is 0.75%, and city and township taxes are 2.25%. No city or township has a rate higher than 2.25%, and 36 have a lower rate, as low as 0.25%. These surtaxes cumulatively raised approximately $2.4 million in 2008.
Tax returns are due by April 17th of each year, with eFiled tax returns and electronic payments accepted and encouraged by the state. If you cannot pay your income tax in full, you are encouraged to submit a partial payment with your tax return and submit a request for a tax payment plan, which will include interest. Alternately, you can use a credit card to pay your tax debt, although a "service charge" of several percent will likely apply. For details about payment plans, call the Kansas Department of Revenue at 1-785-368-8222.
